1. A Belgian architect arrives in Kigali during the 1950s colonial period to design a luxury hotel and begins documenting the exploitation he witnesses in his private journals.
2. An aging concierge in postwar Vienna trains a young refugee as her replacement while reconciling with her estranged daughter who blames her for choosing work over family.
3. A hotel manager in Rwanda during the 1990s genocide shelters over a thousand Tutsi refugees in his hotel while more than a million are killed in violence largely ignored by the international community.
4. A widowed seamstress in 1920s Johannesburg rents rooms to migrant workers and becomes entangled in their labor disputes when police begin surveilling her boarding house.
5. Two brothers inherit their father's crumbling Budapest guesthouse in 1956 and discover letters revealing he sheltered Soviet defectors during the occupation without telling anyone in the family.
6. A former diplomat returns to Nairobi in 1963 to sell his family's colonial-era property but delays the transaction after meeting the local staff who depend on it.
