1. A factory worker in Detroit writes anonymous letters exposing his best friend's embezzlement from their union and later watches the trial proceedings from the gallery without revealing his identity.
2. A biracial teenager in postwar Philadelphia idolizes his activist uncle but their relationship deteriorates when the boy testifies about witnessing him accept bribes from a housing developer.
3. An informant infiltrates a political organization on behalf of federal law enforcement and provides information about the group's leader while that leader becomes romantically involved with another member of the organization.
4. An aging jazz musician nicknamed Messiah mentors a conservatory dropout in New Orleans while his estranged son arrives from California and observes their bond with quiet resentment and envy.
5. Two Portuguese missionaries arrive in rural Ethiopia during a famine and one betrays their shared vow of poverty by accepting land from a corrupt warlord in exchange for baptisms.
6. A gospel choir director in 1950s Memphis dismisses his most talented soloist after discovering the young man sold recordings of their hymns to a secular label without permission.
